We are a gospel church
The word ‘gospel’ simply means ‘good news’, and it is how we describe what God has done for the world through His Son Jesus Christ. Jesus came into our broken world to put right all that is wrong with it. He does this by saving men and women from their sin through His life, death, and resurrection. To be a gospel church, then, means having this joyous, life-changing news at the heart of everything we do.
We EXIST BECAUSE OF THE GOSPEL
The Apostle John says: “This is how God showed His love among us: he sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we love God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” (1 John 4:9-10) The gospel tells us that God took the initiative to love us in our sin. Apart from His love, there would be no church. So as with every local church, the people of Trinity West have been brought together, and continue to gather together, because of the gospel.
We PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL
As those who have experienced this extraordinary love, we long that others would know it too, so we don't keep it to ourselves. We want to share this gospel with all the people of Shepherd’s Bush because we want them to know Jesus and experience His salvation. The gospel is revealed in the Bible and so we keep it central in our gatherings and in our life together.
We AIM TO LIVE OUT THE GOSPEL
This gospel affects and influences every aspect of our lives. The way we live and work is changed radically when we see that Jesus, the eternal Son of God, made Himself a servant of others. So at Trinity West we want to joyfully serve Shepherd’s Bush, and so live out the life-transforming gospel of Jesus Christ.
We are A COMMUNITY CHURCH
Being a community church means that we view our mission of evangelism and discipleship as a corporate project – we’re in it together.
WE ARE DESIGNED FOR COMMUNITY
God exists as persons in community: Father, Son and Holy Spirit (Genesis 1:26), so He created us to be persons in community. An individual in isolation is a tragedy. Even in a world without sin, it was “not good for man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18). God designed humanity to be in community.
WE ARE SAVED INTO COMMUNITY
This becomes clearer when we consider God’s work of salvation. God’s plan was to save ‘a people’ for Himself (e.g. Genesis 12:2; Exodus 6:7) so in calling us to Himself He also calls us to one another. Our salvation necessarily brings us into a new community, with a new identity and new loyalties. The New Testament says the Church is a community of the Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 13:14), in community with Jesus (1 Corinthians 1:9), and with each other (1 Thessalonians 2:8). If an isolated individual is a tragedy, then an isolated Christian must be a travesty!
WE SERVE AS COMMUNITY
Jesus is the one through whom God blesses all nations. In Matthew 28:18-20, He gives the Church the same mission: ‘go and make disciples of all nations’. The Church is the community through which God will fulfil His promise to the nations. So at Trinity West we reach out together, we share our lives not just as individuals but as families and as groups of friends. We also recognise our responsibility for one another’s growth and maturity in the faith. We take seriously our mandate to love one another, bear one another’s burdens as well as rebuke and encourage one another as we live out our calling as disciple-making disciples. Together.
We are a local churchWe believe that the gospel creates a community, which is lived out locally, so Trinity West is committed to Shepherd’s Bush. We don’t just want to speak about Jesus and then leave; we want to speak of Jesus, share our lives, and stay.
WE WANT TO BE INVOLVED IN SHEPHERD’S BUSHWe want to invest our lives in this local area. God cares about local communities. He doesn’t ask people to travel miles from where they live to hear about Him – He sends people into those areas to bring the good news to them. Trinity West is here to share in the life of Shepherd's Bush. We want to share in what people enjoy, to engage in what people care about, and contribute to the life of this area.
WE WANT TO BE DISTINCTIVE IN SHEPHERD’S BUSH
Jesus called His followers “the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). Christians should be as unmissable as a light in darkness. So we want to be distinctive. It should be clear that Trinity West is a community of broken people who have been saved and changed by grace. We want the unity, love and grace that we experience at Trinity West to stand out to people. A light is brightest to those closest to it; so we hope that as a local church for Shepherd’s Bush, people here might clearly see the gospel’s light shining in their midst.
